Chumash indians' tomols

In school I have been learning about Chumash indians. We have groups of things the Chumash had of did. I was assigned in tomols, we will precent and have questions and have them answered on our trifold. I want to share my questions with you and answer them too.

Question # 1 How were the tomols made?
Tomols were made from long thick strips of wood. Yop was hardened into asphalt. After the glue dried the plank was fastened by drilling holes on the side of the seam and tying the planks together with fiber string. Then the holes were filled with hot yop and decorated with mud, leaves, berries and other materials.

Question # 2 Who made the tomols?
Only the greatest craftsmen could make the tomols. Girls weren't ever allowed make the tomols but they were able to give advice of find materials the men needed.

Question # 3 What were the tomols used for?
The Chumash tomols were used for visiting friends in different villages and fishing deep out into sea. On every last day of the month the Chumash would have a big feast/dance. The men would need food to have at the big feast. The would find sharks and dolphins for the feast, the Chumash would use all the parts of the shark and dolphin to use for other things, for example, Chumash men would save the shark's skin for sanding the tomols. The tomols were used for many different things.

Question # 4 How large were the tomols?
The tomols were about 8 to 30 feet long. The typical plank canoe held a crew of 3 people Large canoes held up to 10 people. One member of the crew would act as a bailer because some seawater would seep into the Chumash Tomol. Sometimes a young boy would serve as a bailer. Some canoes can be enormous.

Things I love about my family

MY FAMILY
I have many memories with my family but the one that sticks out at me is the one where everyone is
kind and always willing to invite someone to church or play if they feel left out. Like mom went over to a family's house and she never knew them but she knocked on the door and talked to the mom about church and invited her and her kids and the mom said she might be able to come next week because she was too busy this week.

I also love my family because we are as organized as possible (with help from mom).

The next reason I love my family is our family takes many trips to our favorite places including the sand hill, the beach, gram and papas house, lake arrowhead, a cool hotel in orange county with an awesome waterpark.

I love so many things about my family that I can't wright all of them so I am going to talk about each member of my family individually from youngest to oldest.

James Allen Jenkins
What I love about James is he is so sweet and has the cutest smile. He is always the peacemaker and is very strong. He can hold his head up for a long time and is always ready to talk. He is so cute, adorable, and lovable. I love my James so much and am so glad to have him in my family.

Calvin Spencer Jenkins
What I love about Calvin is that he is funny and makes me laugh when I am sad. I also love Calvin because he is helpful and loving. Calvin is cute and loves ninja turtles. He got a knight castle for Christmas and always shares it. He is also into planes and is so funny with them that it makes me crack up. Calvin goes to peep preschool and is really nice to his friends and if mom asks him who he wants to play with he yells, ''Sisters''. He is also a good adventurer and loves to explore the outdoors. Below is a picture of Cal looking out into the sea. What an adventurer he is.

Eleanor Bailey Jenkins
What I love about Elle is she is so sweet and when I come home from school she gives me a big hug. Elle always play house and is funny and so fun to be around. Before she goes off with her friends at school she checks the bench for kids with no friends and makes sure no one is there and if someone is there she invites them to play. Elle loves to play barbies and always asks me if I want to play. Elle is always so sweet even if something hurts or if she loses a tooth. Elle is so cute and sweet in many ways.

Stephanie LeAnne Jenkins/Mom
What I love about mom is she is very organized. She made up the thing Saturday Jobs and she helps make our house be cleaner. I also love mom because whenever I have playdates mom talks to my friend's mom and she talks so long that she made a longer time for the playdate when its time to leave (I think she does it purposely so we can have a longer time to play). I also love mom because whenever I get hurt she gives me a bandage and helps me get up. Next I love mom because she always asks me how my day was when I get home from school. She also pays for things I love to do like basketball and piano. She also takes me places that are really fun. I wouldn't be living right now if it weren't for mommy.

Spencer Howard Jenkins
What I love about daddy is that he takes me on daddy daughter dates and sometime they last the whole weekend like when he took me to a BYU football game. I also love daddy because he pays for important things I love like piano, school, basketball and other inpotant things. He goes to work every day to make money for  everything. Mom wouldn't be able to have James without daddy. I love daddy because he is funny and he snuggles me.  Dad also makes the yummiest nachos ever. I also remember the time we went to the sand hill and he said"Madi I need to tell you a secret", then he burped in my ear. He also snores really loud. When we were in Monterey I heard dad snoring super loud at night. Dad is the funniest man I've ever known.

I LOVE MY FAMILY!!!
